A building or other structure of special architectural or historic interest formally recognised by Historic England. Listed buildings are graded I, II* or II. Grade I is the highest and therefore most important. The listing includes the interior as well as the exterior of the building, and any buildings or permanent structure within its curtilage.
Local Planning Authorities may also designate buildings as locally listed to preserve them even if they are not formally listed.
